How To Dress Appropriately For A Job Interview

The way you dress to a job interview tells the interviewer a lot about you, it gives the interviewer his initial impression of you and it’s to your advantage if you give a positive one. It is part of what would determine your success or failure in getting the job you seek.

Below are tips to help you check your job interview attire is giving a positive impression.

1: Wear a smile

Smiling can make a big difference in your Interview success or failure, it makes you appear more approachable and confident.

2: Dress appropriately (Wear a neat, tailored suit or dress).

You need to dress appropriately for the position you are applying for, a suit or dress is the best way to go. If you need to buy a new attire to look good do so, it’s a good idea to take someone else with you to give you their opinion about how your purchase looks on you.

3: Wear solid, conservative colours.

Avoid wearing multicoloured clothes as they might distract the interviewer. You are better off going with grey, black etc. as they are neutral colours.

4: Don’t wear too much jewellery.

A simple ring, nice watch, a pair of earrings (if you’re a woman) is more than sufficient. Men should avoid wearing an earring to a job interview.

Tip 5: Women should wear light makeup perfume and hairspray.

Ladies should avoid wearing heavy makeup to a job interview, it tends to give the impression that this is done to compensate for a lack of skills or experience.

Tip 6: Men should wear light cologne and after-shave.

It is wise to ensure that the smell of your after aftershave is not overpowering, even if the rest of your job interview attire is alright the choking smell of your aftershave can be a major put off.

Tip 7: Overdress rather than under dress

If you’reĀ  not sure of how well you should dress for an interview then it’s better to over dress than to be under dressed. The impression created when you attend an interview over dressed is far better than when you attend under dressed.
